Six-Man State Championships

DI: Throckmorton 72, Abbott 30

DII: Richland Springs 60, Follett 14

Class 1A Division II-

Tenaha vs. Munday

Cowboys Stadium, Thursday, Dec 20th, 12:00 p.m.

Last Week

Tenaha 41, Falls City 14

Munday 48, Wellington 6

Class A DII Football fans are in for a treat as Tenaha and Munday return to the state championship for a very interesting rematch. Tenaha beat Munday 52-28 in last year’s state championship game, but thing could be different this time around. Tenaha was undefeated going into the 2011 championship game, while Munday dropped three games fighting its way to the title game last season. This year the tables have turned with Munday all but destroying every opponent in their path, while Tenaha dropped four games to 1A teams prior to entering the playoffs.

Class 1A Division I-

Stamford vs. Mart

Cowboys Stadium, Thursday, Dec 20th, 4:00 p.m.

Last Week

Stamford 41, Italy 8

Mart 42, Shiner 7

Talk about an exciting match-up between two traditional small-school powerhouse football programs. Mart and Stamford have a combined  8 state championships between the two programs, but Stamford has struggled to win the title since they were stripped of their championship win in 1959. After Stamford’s decade of championship wins and appearances, the Bulldogs didn’t make it back to state until 2011. Stamford lost to Mason 62-40 at Cowboys Stadium, but has returned for another chance to bring home the state championship trophy. The problem for Stamford is that they face the Mart Panthers who are known for having one of the best small-school football programs in state. Mart’s last state championship win was a 28-7 victory over Goldthwaite in 2010. The Mart Panthers have put up over 200 points in their four playoff games this season, and if they win this game they’ll bring home their 6th state championship trophy.

Class 2A Division II-

Corsicana Mildred vs. East Bernard

Cowboys Stadium, Thursday, Dec 20th, 8:00 p.m.

Last Week

Corsicana Mildred 28, Sonora 14

East Bernard 52, Elysian Fields 8

Since moving up from Class 1A to 2A, Corsicana Mildred has established itself as a force to be reckoned with at the Division II level. The Eagles struggled during their first couple of seasons in 2A, but since 2006 they have compiled an overall record of 61-20. Last year Mildred went undefeated during the regular season, but lost to Cisco 35-28. The Eagles only loss this season was a 70-22 blowout t the hands of the Centerville Tigers, but since then Mildred has run the table to earn the school’s first ever appearance in a state championship football game. However, East Bernard will be a very stout opponent for the Eagles due to the fact that they blowout returning state champ and No. 1 ranked Refugio 54-23, and then blew out a very good Elysian Fields team by a score of 52-8.

Class 2A Division I -

Cameron Yoe vs. Daingerfield

Cowboys Stadium, Friday, Dec 21st, 12:00 p.m.

Last Week

Cameron Yoe 39, Newton 22

Daingerfield 29, Wall 22

This is game is another big time match-up between two powerhouse football programs, and will probably be the best small-school title game of the year. Daingerfield has accumulated six state championships throughout their football history, and their last was a 33-27 victory over Cameron Yoe in 2010. The Yoemen have made the trip to the title game more than once, but their last and only state championship was earned in 1981 at the 3A level. Daingerfield’s journey to the championship game has not been as dominant as prior Tiger football teams, but they are there and that is all that counts. Cameron Yoe holds an undefeated 14-0 record, and I’m sure Rick Rhoades and his Yoemen will want to avenge their 2010 loss to the Tigers.

Class 3A Division II -

Navasota vs. Gilmer

Cowboys Stadium, Friday, Dec 21st, 4:00 p.m.

Last Week

Navasota 24, Bellville 7

Gilmer 50, Graham 7

The Navasota Rattlers have had their best football seasons ever, and are returning to the state championship for only the second time in school history. In 1988 the Rattlers made it to the 3A state championship, but lost to Southlake Carroll. Navasota has established a reputation for fielding strong football teams since then, but this season the Rattlers bite has been to much for every team that has stood in their way. The Rattlers are 15-0, and their closest game this season was a 31-20 win over La Marque in the Regional round of the playoffs. The Rattlers will face the Gilmer Buckeyes who are returning to the championship game for the first time since 2007 when they lost to Liberty Hill 38-13. Gilmer has also established a reputation for fielding some of the best football teams and athletes in the state, and Buckeyes Head Coach Jeff Taylor hopes to be able to bring home his second state title since taking over the program.

Class 3A Division I State Championship

Stephenville wins its 5th state championship, and first ever 3A state title.
